“My dad didn’t actually want me to start racing at first,” admits Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the newly crowned championship leader in Formula 1. It’s a surprising revelation, especially considering that his father, Marco Antonelli, has spent most of his life deeply embedded in the world of motorsport. Yet, behind the scenes, his instincts as a father initially pulled him in the opposite direction.

Growing up, Andrea Kimi Antonelli was immersed in the sights, sounds, and rhythms of racing circuits. Weekends were rarely quiet family affairs—they were filled with the roar of engines, the smell of burning rubber, and the constant motion of pit crews and drivers preparing for competition. As a child, he often accompanied his father to races, quietly observing everything from the garage. “I owe everything to my dad,” Antonelli explained in an interview, reflecting on how his journey began. “He’s been a driver himself and still is, and he’s been running his team for many years. That environment naturally pulled me into the sport.” What began as simple curiosity soon turned into fascination, and then into a relentless desire to be behind the wheel.

However, Marco Antonelli’s hesitation was rooted in experience rather than doubt. Having lived through both the highs and lows of racing, he understood that motorsport is not just about glory and adrenaline—it can also be unforgiving, unpredictable, and emotionally draining. He had witnessed firsthand how quickly fortunes can change, how victories can be followed by crushing setbacks, and how the pressure of competition can take its toll.

“To be honest, he didn’t want me to race in the beginning,” Antonelli admitted. “He knows how incredible this world can be, but also how harsh it is. He’s experienced the difficult side himself, and he didn’t want me to go through that. He was trying to protect me from disappointment, from the tough moments that every driver eventually faces.”

That protective instinct created a quiet tension during Antonelli’s early years. While Andrea found himself drawn more and more toward racing, his father remained cautious, hoping perhaps that his son’s interest might fade or shift toward something less demanding. Marco’s reluctance gradually gave way to support. Recognizing that his son’s passion was genuine and unwavering, he decided to guide rather than resist. Antonelli’s talent quickly became evident once he entered karting. His performances stood out, attracting attention from figures within the racing world. Among them was Gian Carlo Minardi, a respected name in motorsport circles. Impressed by the young driver’s potential, Minardi played a key role in connecting the Antonelli family with one of the sport’s most powerful organizations.

That connection ultimately led to Toto Wolff, head of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team. “It all started thanks to the Minardi family,” Antonelli recalled. “They reached out to Toto and told him about me. That’s when things really began to move.”

Shortly afterward, Mercedes sent Gwen Lagrue to evaluate Antonelli’s abilities. The assessment confirmed what many had already begun to suspect: he was a rare talent. By the end of 2017, Antonelli had been invited to join the team’s junior programme, marking a major milestone in his journey.

One memory from that period remains especially vivid. “I remember being in the car with my dad when we got the call from Toto,” Antonelli said. “We were together when we found out I’d been accepted into the programme. It was such a special moment—not just for me, but for both of us.” It was also symbolic, representing the point where Marco’s early fears had fully transformed into pride and belief in his son’s future.

As Antonelli progressed through the ranks, his reputation continued to grow. His eventual rise to Formula 1—and his rapid success, including a breakthrough victory at the Shanghai International Circuit—cemented his status as one of the sport’s most exciting new stars. That win, however, came with a lighthearted moment: the trackside announcer mistakenly introduced him as Kimi Räikkönen, the 2007 world champion.

Antonelli has since embraced the humor in that mix-up, while also clarifying an important detail—he was not named after Räikkönen. “My full name is quite long—Andrea Kimi Antonelli,” he explained. “In racing, everyone just calls me Kimi because it’s a familiar name in motorsport, and I’m fine with that.”

Still, he makes an effort to preserve his full identity, especially in more formal or personal contexts. “For example, when we created a charity item, they wanted to label it ‘Kimi Antonelli,’ but I asked them to use my full name instead,” he said. “That’s who I am at the end of the day.”

Among friends and family, however, things are more relaxed. “At home, the people closest to me call me Andrea,” he added, highlighting the contrast between his public persona and private life.

Looking back, Antonelli’s story is as much about family as it is about racing. His father’s initial reluctance wasn’t a lack of faith—it was a reflection of the realities of a sport that can be both exhilarating and unforgiving.
