Rival Driver Risks His Life to Rescue British Racer From Burning Ferrari

A terrifying racing accident at the Shanghai International Circuit nearly ended in tragedy when a British driver became trapped inside a Ferrari that was engulfed in flames. His life was ultimately saved by a rival competitor who immediately abandoned his own race and ran toward the burning wreck.

Ollie Millroy, 36, was competing in a China GT race when his Ferrari became involved in a violent collision while the cars were negotiating a corner. The impact sent Millroy’s vehicle spinning away from the racing line, with the car quickly becoming surrounded by fire and thick clouds of smoke.

Video footage from the dramatic incident captured the terrifying moments that followed. Millroy’s Ferrari can be seen losing control and rotating across the track before coming to a stop. From his hospital bed, the British driver shared a photograph and publicly thanked the young Dutchman for his extraordinary bravery.

Millroy explained that he remembered very little about the accident itself. He said there was a significant gap in his memory, covering the moments immediately before the crash and the period afterward.

Despite not remembering the rescue clearly, he said Hartog’s actions would remain with him for the rest of his life.

Millroy praised the Dutch driver for stopping almost immediately, even before marshals or fire crews had reached the scene. According to Millroy, Hartog willingly put himself in danger to reach the burning car and attempt to free him.

The British racer also described Hartog as a hero and joked that, when he eventually tells his three children about what happened, they will regard the Dutch driver as a superhero.

Millroy’s injuries included five broken ribs, a fractured collarbone, a broken hand and finger, as well as a bruised lung. While the injuries were undoubtedly painful and serious, Millroy acknowledged that the outcome could have been considerably worse.

His message to Hartog was simple but deeply personal: he felt that he owed the young driver his life.
