VINTON COUNTY, Ohio (WOIO) — Officials in Vinton County have provided an update on the disturbing case involving 16 children found living in terrible conditions and four adults who were arrested and charged. One of the adults has been released from custody due to medical concerns.

Vinton County Prosecutor William Archer held a press conference and explained that Gary Siders Sr. was released on bond without having to pay any money after he fell while heading to his bond hearing. Medical tests following the fall revealed that Siders Sr. has a serious undisclosed medical condition.

Siders Sr. requires specialized care at a facility outside the county. Archer noted that if he remained in county custody, the county would have been responsible for covering these medical expenses. His preliminary hearing, originally scheduled for Thursday in an unrelated case, was postponed because his defense attorney was unavailable. Gary Siders Jr., Gary Siders Sr., Christina Siders, and Elizabeth Siders were arraigned on July 1, with each being charged with 16 counts of child endangerment. Bond was set at $300,000 for each defendant. Wilson identified them as the grandfather, grandmother, father, and mother of the children.

The judge ordered that the suspects have no contact with the victims or with each other while the case proceeds.

“This really looked third world,” Wilson said during the initial press conference. “It was absolutely terrible.” He added that if authorities had waited another 24 hours before conducting the raid, some of the children might not have survived.

Sheriff Cain described the conditions as appalling, stating, “Most of our livestock is kept in better conditions. It was disgusting.”

Several children were in serious medical condition when discovered, with two being airlifted to hospitals due to the severity of their situations. “Some of the children could not even speak and looked like feral animals,” Wilson reported.

The children ranged in age from 18 months to 18 years old. All 16 are currently undergoing comprehensive medical evaluations. “The number one priority is to make sure that these kids are taken care of physically, mentally and emotionally,” Wilson stressed.

Wilson noted that the family members are not originally from Vinton County but had been living in the area for approximately four years. They also have connections to Gallia County and Wisconsin.

Some neighbors in the Vinton County area expressed shock upon learning about the children, saying they had no idea kids were living at the property. “They were good at keeping these kids out of sight,” Wilson explained.

The children have been placed in temporary custody of the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services. “It appears from the evidence in this case that these kids have been in a position where people they should have been able to trust to take care of them have failed them, not only failed them, but harmed them,” Wilson said.
