Father Speaks Out After Four Children, Their Mother, and Grandmother Were Found Dead in New York Apartment

A father from Utah has spoken publicly following the tragic deaths of his four children, who were discovered alongside their mother and grandmother inside an apartment in upstate New York. As authorities continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the case, the grieving father described the heartbreaking realization that he would never again see the children he had been eagerly preparing to spend the summer with.

The victims were identified by police as 64-year-old Amy Steadman, 44-year-old Sarah Myers, and Myers’ four children: 13-year-old Harper Harmon, 11-year-old Hudson Harmon, 10-year-old Gavin Harmon, and 10-year-old Gracelynn Harmon. The bodies were found Tuesday evening after local officers responded to a welfare check requested by a concerned neighbor.

According to investigators, the neighbor contacted authorities after becoming worried because Steadman had not been seen for several days. Officers arrived at the apartment in Mechanicville, New York, to investigate the situation and made the tragic discovery inside the residence.

Mechanicville Police Chief William Rabbitt said the victims had likely been deceased for a significant period before they were found. Because of the condition of the bodies, investigators were initially unable to make immediate identifications at the scene, and additional investigative procedures were required.

Authorities have stated that evidence collected from inside the apartment suggests the deaths may have resulted from intentional poisoning. Investigators reportedly recovered numerous prescription medications as well as over-the-counter drugs during their search of the residence. Police also revealed that one of the children had sustained sharp-force injuries. Investigators have not released further details regarding those injuries while forensic examinations continue.

Chief Rabbitt said the available evidence indicates that Amy Steadman may have played a role in the events that occurred. Law enforcement officials cautioned against drawing premature conclusions before all forensic testing has been completed. Toxicology examinations, medical examiner findings, and additional investigative work are still pending.

Chief Rabbitt reiterated that authorities will not determine responsibility until every aspect of the investigation has been carefully reviewed.

“The final determination regarding responsibility will only be made after investigators have completed their work, toxicology reports have been received, and the medical examiner has finalized the causes and manners of death,” Rabbitt explained.

As investigators continue examining the evidence, attention has also turned to the family’s background.

Court records show that Sarah Myers and Brady Harmon were married in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 2015. Their marriage ended several years later after they separated in 2019. Their divorce was finalized in 2020.

Following the divorce, the former couple shared joint custody of their four children under a court-approved parenting arrangement. According to those records, Myers cared for the children throughout the school year, while Harmon was granted parenting time each summer from July 1 through September 1. The custody agreement also included scheduled video calls, holiday visitation, and opportunities for the father to spend birthdays with his children.

Harmon, who continues to live in Utah, said he had been looking forward to reuniting with his children in just a matter of days. According to his account, he had been counting down to July 1, when the summer visitation period was scheduled to begin.

Instead of preparing to welcome his children home, Harmon was confronted with devastating news that changed his life forever.

Speaking about the years leading up to the tragedy, Harmon said he had spent significant time, effort, and financial resources attempting to secure greater access to his children following the divorce.

He explained that he had invested thousands of dollars pursuing legal options in hopes of improving custody arrangements and obtaining additional parenting rights. Despite those efforts, he said he felt he had achieved very little before learning of the deaths.

Reflecting on the loss, Harmon said the greatest gift in his life had been his four children, adding that they had now been taken away from him forever.

He also expressed strong personal opinions regarding who he believes bears responsibility for the tragedy. However, investigators have not confirmed those allegations, and the official investigation remains ongoing.

Beyond the emotional impact of losing his children, Harmon described another painful challenge he now faces. He said he hopes to bury all four children in Utah, where he lives, but transporting their remains has become extremely difficult.

According to Harmon, the amount of time that had passed before the bodies were discovered has complicated efforts to return the children to Utah for burial. He described the situation as another heartbreaking obstacle during an already unimaginable period of grief.

Police confirmed that investigators have remained in contact with Harmon throughout the investigation and continue gathering information from family members and others connected to the case.
