Kirstie Allsopp Reveals She Was Airlifted to Hospital After a Serious Fall During Her Birthday Holiday

Television presenter Kirstie Allsopp has revealed that a family holiday took an unexpected and painful turn after she suffered a serious fall and had to be transported to hospital by air ambulance for surgery.

The 55-year-old Location, Location, Location presenter shared details of the accident with her followers, including photographs showing her injured and heavily bandaged foot as well as images taken shortly before she underwent an operation on her leg.

Kirstie explained that the accident happened while she was enjoying a family day out on the coast in Devon as part of her birthday celebrations. What had started as a relaxing day at one of her favourite places quickly became an emergency when she slipped on a muddy section of a steep path.

According to the presenter, it took a large number of people to locate her and arrange emergency medical assistance. Because she was in a relatively difficult-to-reach coastal area, the emergency response involved several different teams, including paramedics from the RNLI Bude Lifeboat service and Cornwall Air Ambulance.

Sharing a photograph of herself preparing for surgery, Kirstie explained that she had been enjoying a traditional birthday routine with her family before the accident.

She said that for many years, ever since her son Oscar was born, her family had celebrated her birthday at Meadowgate, a place she considers particularly special. Their usual plans involved having a picnic at Welcombe Mouth beach, going for a swim and then walking back to the house for birthday cake.

Unfortunately, this year’s celebration ended very differently.

While walking along the steep path, Kirstie lost her footing on a muddy patch and fell. Her son Oscar reportedly ran for help while other people worked to establish exactly where she was so emergency services could reach her.

A Complicated Rescue

The presenter said she was given a substantial amount of pain medication while waiting for assistance. As a result, she admitted that she was unable to properly remember all the names of the people who helped her.

She recalled several first names, including Chris, Jeremy and possibly Lee, while also remembering a paramedic named Jake who was in the ambulance. However, Kirstie acknowledged that there were many more people involved in helping her than she could remember.

She expressed enormous gratitude to everyone who played a role in getting her safely to hospital.

Kirstie also praised the emergency teams for their efforts, saying she felt extremely fortunate that they were able to locate her quickly and transport her to medical care.

The Cornwall Air Ambulance played a crucial part in the rescue, and Kirstie later shared an image showing the service making its way to her location.

She also credited modern location technology with helping rescuers find her. Her reference to What3Words highlighted how useful location-sharing technology can be when someone is injured in an unfamiliar or difficult-to-access area.

Surgery and Recovery

After being transported to Barnstaple Hospital, Kirstie received treatment from medical staff whom she described as exceptionally kind and caring.

She later confirmed that doctors had operated on her injured leg and that she expected to return home soon.

Although she was relieved that the operation had gone well, she acknowledged that her recovery would require some adjustment. She expects to spend a period of time wearing a medical boot and using crutches.

Despite the seriousness of the accident, Kirstie maintained a positive outlook. She said she felt extremely lucky that emergency workers had been able to reach her so quickly and that her job is one she can continue to perform while using crutches.

She also described the incident as a birthday experience she was unlikely to forget anytime soon.

Her message to her followers was largely one of appreciation. Rather than focusing solely on the frightening circumstances of the accident, she used her post to recognize the many people who helped her and the hospital staff who cared for her.

Kirstie’s Family Life

Kirstie’s accident occurred during a family holiday, making the incident particularly significant for her loved ones.

She married property businessman Ben Anderson in January 2025 after being together for more than two decades. The couple have two sons, Bay, 20, and Oscar, 18.

Her son Oscar was particularly important during the accident because he reportedly ran to find help after his mother fell. Kirstie’s account made it clear that she was grateful for the support of her family as well as the emergency services.

The presenter has also recently been reflecting on another major part of her life: her long-running career on Location, Location, Location alongside co-host Phil Spencer.

Looking Back at Location, Location, Location

During a recent appearance on This Morning, Kirstie and Phil looked back on how their television partnership began.

Kirstie jokingly suggested that she was not necessarily Phil’s first choice for the role. She recalled that there had initially been an Italian woman whom Phil was particularly interested in working with, but her strong accent was considered an issue.

Another potential presenter was reportedly an estate agent, but Kirstie suggested that the woman may have felt somewhat intimidated by the scale of the project.

Eventually, Kirstie and Phil ended up working together almost by chance. They filmed a pilot episode that neither of them expected to become a major television programme. At the time, both apparently assumed they would return to their regular careers.

However, the pilot was eventually commissioned, and the pair were asked to become the presenters of the series.

Their partnership went on to become one of the most recognizable duos on British television.

More Than Just Television Presenters

Kirstie and Phil have frequently surprised viewers by revealing how directly involved they can be in helping people find and purchase properties featured on the programme.

The pair explained that some viewers and contributors initially assumed their involvement was staged for television. In reality, they can become closely involved in negotiations and discussions with estate agents.

Kirstie recalled occasions when people were surprised to see her actually contacting agents and discussing deals after filming.

Phil similarly remembered a couple who had filmed with them for several days and were astonished when he took out his phone to contact an estate agent and discuss the property.
