A 25-year-old supply teacher in Cardiff has drawn significant public interest following her composed and practical response to an episode of street harassment. Aneesa Dawn encountered verbal harassment from the driver of a white van while waiting to cross a busy road with her younger sister. Rather than allowing the incident to pass without consequence, she documented the event and reported the vehicle’s untaxed status to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), potentially exposing the driver to substantial financial penalties.

The event took place on April 15 on Newport Road, a heavily trafficked three-lane thoroughfare in the Welsh capital. Aneesa and her 23-year-old sister were initially perplexed by repeated horn beeps, assuming they related to a traffic matter. They soon realised the driver was directing his attention toward them. The situation escalated when the driver lowered his window, leaned out, and shouted, “Hi love, I’ve been beeping at you, you sausage.”

Despite feeling embarrassed and intimidated in broad daylight amid numerous pedestrians and other vehicles, Aneesa promptly began recording the interaction on her mobile phone. When the driver observed her filming, he opened the van door and continued shouting, further heightening the sisters’ discomfort. The men reportedly remained stationary despite a green traffic light, disregarding other drivers sounding their horns for them to proceed.

Following the departure of the van, Aneesa conducted an online vehicle check using the registration details she had recorded. Upon confirming that the vehicle was untaxed, she submitted a formal report to the DVLA. Operating an untaxed vehicle on public roads can result in an initial penalty of £30 plus one-and-a-half times the outstanding tax amount. Should the matter remain unresolved, it may escalate to criminal proceedings, with potential fines reaching £1,000.

Aneesa, who relocated to Wales from London, Ontario, Canada, three years ago, described the encounter as prolonged and unsettling. “We were confused and looked at each other and saw that they were beeping at us like nine times,” she explained. “When he noticed that I was filming, he opened his side door and started yelling — that freaked me out. He had no shame. It was daylight and there were people around — it was just embarrassing.”

She further noted that the incident demonstrates street harassment can occur at any time, not exclusively during evening hours. “It just shows it does not need to be night-time. It can be a busy day with people around and pedestrians to catcall women.”

Aneesa shared the video footage, along with screenshots of the DVLA report, on her social media accounts with the caption “Got harassed in Cardiff but karma had my back.” The post has garnered substantial attention, exceeding ten million views on Instagram and approaching one million on TikTok. Nevertheless, the viral attention also generated negative comments, which temporarily affected Aneesa’s sense of security when walking in Cardiff. She subsequently filed a report with South Wales Police, as street harassment based on sex constitutes a specific criminal offence in the United Kingdom. A police spokesperson emphasised that everyone deserves to feel safe in public spaces and encouraged reporting such incidents.

The episode held additional emotional weight because it involved Aneesa’s younger sister during one of her initial visits to the city. The experience left both women shaken, leading the sister to cancel a planned solo trip to Edinburgh due to safety concerns. Aneesa described assuming a protective “big sister” role and expressed frustration that such behaviour continues to occur.

This was not Aneesa’s first experience with verbal harassment, though she characterised this instance as particularly prolonged. She has expressed hope that sharing the video will help normalise discussions about catcalling and challenge its perceived acceptability. “It’s been really great to create a platform to speak about catcalling — it’s such a normalised situation and I’m shining a light on why it’s not ok.”

The DVLA has indicated it cannot comment on specific cases but confirmed through its systems that the vehicle in question remains untaxed. Aneesa viewed the discovery of the tax violation as “the cherry on the top” of an otherwise distressing event, providing an additional measure of accountability.
