A brief obituary with almost nothing to say about a grandmother accused of killing her own family has sparked widespread attention as investigators continue trying to determine exactly what happened inside a quiet apartment building in upstate New York.

The two-line notice for 64-year-old Amy Steadman was published just days after police announced they believe she intentionally poisoned herself, her adult daughter and four young grandchildren before the family’s bodies were discovered inside her apartment in Mechanicville, New York.

Authorities have not yet released final autopsy findings or toxicology reports, but investigators say evidence recovered inside the residence points toward an apparent murder-suicide. The unusually short obituary, combined with the ongoing criminal investigation, has become another striking element of a case that has devastated the local community and left grieving relatives searching for answers.

The family’s bodies were discovered on the evening of June 23 after concerned neighbors contacted police requesting a welfare check. Residents reported that they had not seen anyone from the family for several days, prompting officers to visit the apartment building.

Her memorial described Myers as “a devoted mother” who loved her children deeply and cared for them with complete dedication.

The different tone between the two obituaries has generated significant discussion online, with many observers interpreting the brief notice as reflecting the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the investigation.

Neither obituary addressed the allegations currently being investigated by police.

While the investigation continues, painful disagreements have emerged among surviving relatives regarding who may have been responsible for the deaths.

The children’s father, Brady Harmon, has publicly expressed his belief that both Steadman and his estranged former wife were involved.

Harmon has spoken with several news organizations since learning that his children had died.

He has described the emotional devastation of preparing to reunite with his children after years apart, only to receive news that they had been killed.

According to Harmon, he had not seen his four children in person since 2019 because of a lengthy custody dispute.

Court proceedings had recently resulted in an agreement allowing the children to spend approximately two months with him in Utah beginning July 1.

Instead of preparing for that long-awaited reunion, Harmon was informed by police that his children had been found dead more than 2,000 miles away.

The grieving father has repeatedly said he believes the timing of the deaths was connected to the upcoming visitation.

Speaking publicly after the tragedy, Harmon said he personally suspects Steadman and Myers acted together.

He acknowledged that his belief remains speculation but said he cannot ignore that the children were scheduled to travel to Utah only days later.

Harmon has also spoken about his plans to bury all four children in Utah.

He said he wants them laid to rest far from New York, where they spent their final days.

Friends and supporters have expressed sympathy for Harmon, who has said he lost the opportunity to embrace his children one final time after waiting years to see them again.

However, not everyone close to Sarah Myers agrees with Harmon’s assessment.

Another of Myers’ former husbands, John Bauman, has publicly defended her character.

Bauman described Myers as a loving parent whose children meant everything to her.

He said he cannot believe she participated in harming them, insisting that nothing about her behavior during the years he knew her suggested she would ever intentionally hurt her children.
