An Australian man has been arrested in Thailand after police allegedly linked him to the death of a 17-year-old girl whose body was discovered stuffed inside a suitcase near a railway line, a case that has shocked both countries and prompted an intensive homicide investigation.

Thai authorities say 45-year-old Simon Carman was taken into custody at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport just hours after the teenager’s remains were found, as investigators raced to stop him from leaving the country.

Carman has denied all allegations against him, insisting he had nothing to do with the girl’s death. However, investigators say surveillance footage, forensic evidence and his alleged movements in the hours before the discovery of the body led them to seek his arrest.

The victim has been identified as 17-year-old Tunchanok Donhomla, who was reported missing by her family at approximately 5 p.m. local time on Friday, June 26.

Only a few hours later, police located her body under horrifying circumstances.

According to Thai authorities, Donhomla’s naked body had been placed inside a large black suitcase and abandoned along railway tracks roughly a 10-minute drive from the hotel where investigators believe she spent her final hours.

The gruesome discovery immediately launched a large-scale investigation involving Pattaya City Police and tourist police, who began reviewing security camera footage from businesses and hotels throughout the area.

Investigators say surveillance video quickly focused their attention on Carman, an Australian national who had been staying at a Pattaya hotel.

According to police, security cameras captured Donhomla entering the hotel with Carman during the early hours of Thursday morning after he allegedly picked her up from Pattaya’s Beach Road entertainment district.

Police believe the pair remained together inside one of the hotel’s rooms.

Authorities have not publicly disclosed exactly what occurred inside the room, but investigators say they do not believe Donhomla left the hotel alive.

As detectives reconstructed the timeline, they uncovered additional surveillance footage they believe documents the hours following the alleged killing.

Police allege cameras recorded Carman leaving the hotel around 9:30 p.m. carrying a large black suitcase that appeared similar to the one later found containing the teenager’s remains.

Investigators say additional security cameras tracked him riding a motorcycle while transporting the suitcase toward the railway tracks where the body was eventually discovered.

According to police, Carman disappeared from camera view for approximately ten minutes near the location where the suitcase was later recovered.

Shortly afterward, investigators say surveillance footage showed him returning to the hotel alone.

Authorities believe that period represents the time during which the suitcase was abandoned.

The following day, after the teenager had been reported missing, police discovered the suitcase and immediately began examining evidence at the scene.

Police Colonel Anek Sarathongyu, superintendent of Pattaya City Police Station, described the condition of Donhomla’s body as deeply disturbing.

“She was completely naked,” Sarathongyu told ABC News.

He said her face displayed severe injuries, including extensive bruising and swelling.

“Her face showed signs of severe assault, with swelling and bruising covering the entire face, and blood was flowing from her mouth and nose,” the police superintendent said.

Authorities have not yet publicly released the official cause of death while forensic examinations continue.

However, investigators believe the visible injuries are consistent with a violent assault before the body was placed inside the suitcase.

Police have not disclosed whether any weapon was recovered or whether toxicology testing has revealed additional evidence.

As detectives gathered surveillance footage, officers simultaneously began searching for Carman.

According to investigators, they learned he was attempting to leave Thailand.

Police located him at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, where authorities say he was preparing to purchase a ticket back to Australia.

He was arrested approximately two hours after Donhomla’s body was discovered.

Footage released following the arrest shows officers taking Carman into custody inside the airport.

Authorities subsequently transported him for questioning before transferring him to Pattaya Prison, where he remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.

Police have filed four criminal charges against Carman.

According to investigators, the charges include murder as well as offenses involving allegedly taking a minor for indecent purposes.

Thai police have not publicly released the complete wording of each charge, but officials say prosecutors believe sufficient evidence exists to continue pursuing the case.

Carman has denied every allegation.

Lieutenant Colonel Kanoknun Sooksri, who is leading the investigation, confirmed to Australian media that the suspect rejects accusations that he murdered the teenager.

Instead, police say Carman offered a different explanation for Donhomla’s disappearance.

According to Police Colonel Sarathongyu, Carman claimed the teenager simply vanished while he was asleep inside the hotel room.

“He said she disappeared from the room while I was asleep and unaware of anything,” Sarathongyu said, describing Carman’s statement to investigators.

Authorities say they do not believe that version of events.

Investigators also point to physical injuries observed on Carman during his arrest.

According to police, officers documented multiple scratch marks across his upper body, including visible injuries on his neck and arm.

Police believe the scratches may have resulted from a struggle.

During questioning, investigators asked Carman how he sustained those injuries.

According to authorities, he replied, “I think it’s a spider; they always get in here.”

Investigators say they remain skeptical of that explanation.

Police allege the injuries are more consistent with defensive wounds inflicted during a physical confrontation.

Forensic specialists are continuing to examine DNA evidence, fingerprints and biological material collected from both the hotel room and the abandoned suitcase.

Authorities have not disclosed whether any forensic testing has directly linked Carman to the body.

Investigators have also not revealed whether Donhomla knew Carman before the encounter or whether they met for the first time on Beach Road shortly before entering the hotel.

Those questions remain central to understanding the circumstances that led to the teenager’s death.

Police have likewise withheld details regarding whether robbery, sexual assault or another motive may have played a role.

Officials say releasing additional evidence could compromise the ongoing investigation.

The case has drawn widespread attention throughout Thailand and Australia because of the disturbing allegations and the age of the victim.

Donhomla’s death has also renewed discussion about the risks faced by vulnerable young people in Pattaya’s nightlife districts, where authorities routinely conduct operations targeting human trafficking and exploitation.

Investigators continue interviewing hotel employees, reviewing surveillance footage from surrounding businesses and analyzing electronic evidence seized during the investigation.

Officials believe those efforts will help establish an even more detailed timeline of Donhomla’s final hours.

Meanwhile, Carman remains in custody while prosecutors continue building their case.

Under Thailand’s criminal justice system, investigators can continue gathering evidence while the suspect remains detained pending formal court proceedings.

Authorities have emphasized that Carman is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

Nevertheless, police say the evidence collected thus far gives them confidence in the direction of their investigation.

“We believe he killed her, and he is being questioned on suspicion of murder,” Police Colonel Sarathongyu said.

As forensic testing continues and investigators work to answer the many remaining questions, Donhomla’s family is left mourning the loss of a 17-year-old whose life ended under tragic circumstances.

For now, detectives say their focus remains on reconstructing every moment leading up to her death, ensuring all available evidence is thoroughly examined and determining exactly what happened inside the hotel room before the suitcase containing her body was abandoned beside the railway tracks.
