The fatal stabbing of a young Texas mother of five has left an entire community grieving, while video showing two of the accused suspects smiling and laughing as they were taken into police custody has sparked outrage online and intensified public interest in the case.

Caroline “Caro” Peña, 32, died on June 25 after suffering multiple stab wounds during a violent confrontation outside a home in Del Rio, Texas. Authorities have charged three women with murder, alleging they participated in the daylight attack that unfolded on a residential street before horrified witnesses.

The Del Rio Police Department identified the suspects as sisters Kitty Mia Diaz, 21, and Amaya “Cookie” Diaz, 19, along with 21-year-old Kyandra Renee Faz. All three have been arrested and charged with murder as detectives continue investigating what led to the deadly encounter.

Police said officers were first dispatched to Val Verde Regional Medical Center shortly after 2:10 p.m. after receiving reports that a woman had arrived with multiple stab wounds.

Investigators quickly determined that the assault itself had taken place on the 800 block of East 10th Street, only a short distance away. Detectives secured the scene and began reviewing surveillance footage while interviewing witnesses in an effort to reconstruct exactly what happened.

According to authorities, the investigation led them to identify the three women as suspects within hours of the attack.

Peña initially survived the stabbing and was rushed to Val Verde Regional Medical Center for emergency treatment. Because of the severity of her injuries, doctors arranged for her to be airlifted to a hospital in San Antonio.

Despite the efforts of medical personnel, she died later that evening, approximately seven hours after the attack.

Footage captured by an independent journalist shows one of the sisters smiling, laughing and appearing to joke while officers escorted her toward a patrol vehicle.

At one point, the younger woman can reportedly be heard shouting, “Stop recording!” while continuing to smile as cameras documented the arrest.

After she was placed inside the police vehicle, additional footage appeared to show her lowering the window, leaning toward the camera, sticking out her tongue and making playful expressions.

The behavior quickly drew criticism online, where many viewers questioned how someone accused in such a serious crime could appear so carefree only hours after a young mother had been mortally wounded.

Independent journalist Michael Elizondo, who filmed the arrests, later described what he witnessed.

He explained that he initially began recording simply because of the heavy police presence in the neighborhood and did not yet know what crime officers were investigating.

According to Elizondo, the first arrest did not immediately stand out to him.

However, he said the second woman’s demeanor immediately caught his attention.

Rather than appearing frightened or emotional, he described her as smiling continuously and acting as though nothing serious had happened.

Elizondo said he was particularly surprised when she continued making faces from inside the patrol vehicle after being taken into custody.

The arrest videos circulated widely across social media platforms before being picked up by national news organizations, fueling additional discussion surrounding the case.

Meanwhile, investigators continued examining surveillance footage that allegedly captured the fatal attack itself.

Police have not released that recording publicly, but court documents indicate home surveillance cameras documented the confrontation from beginning to end.

Authorities allege Peña arrived at Kyandra Faz’s residence before the two Diaz sisters pulled up shortly afterward.

Investigators believe Amaya Diaz exited the vehicle carrying what appeared to be a knife before confronting Peña.

According to police affidavits, she allegedly stabbed Peña before the other two suspects joined in the assault.

Authorities further allege that after the stabbing, all three women fled the area.

The investigation eventually led detectives to locate the suspects, who were arrested later the same day.

Police have not publicly identified a motive for the confrontation.

However, investigators have acknowledged that the women knew one another prior to the incident.
