Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodriguez have officially become husband and wife, bringing a private chapter of their decade-long relationship to a quiet conclusion in Portugal.

The football superstar and the Spanish-Argentine model married in a civil ceremony in Cascais on Tuesday, surrounded by their five children. After years of speculation over when they would finally walk down the aisle, the couple chose an intimate celebration rather than the huge public event many fans had imagined.

Ronaldo confirmed the news himself with a remarkably understated social media post. Instead of sharing photographs of the ceremony or revealing details about the celebrations, the Portugal captain simply uploaded a photograph of the couple’s wedding bands and captioned it: “C❤️G.”

A representative for the couple later confirmed that they were officially married, describing the ceremony as a private and intimate occasion attended by their children.

The low-key announcement was striking considering the enormous global interest in the couple’s relationship. Ronaldo and Georgina have spent years living under intense public scrutiny, with fans following everything from their family life and holidays to their engagement and plans for a wedding.

Yet when the moment finally arrived, they chose to keep the occasion firmly within the family.

The wedding came just days after a bizarre wave of speculation that Ronaldo and Georgina were preparing to marry at Funchal Cathedral. Thousands of fans reportedly gathered outside the church expecting to catch a glimpse of the sporting icon and his bride-to-be.

There was just one problem.

The couple were not getting married there.

The ceremony taking place at the cathedral belonged to an entirely unrelated Portuguese couple from Madeira, Fabio Ramos and Fatima Nicole Cunha Teixeira. What had appeared to be a potential celebrity wedding became an unexpected case of mistaken identity, leaving fans waiting for the real announcement.

That announcement has now arrived, and after almost ten years together, Ronaldo and Georgina have made their relationship official.

Their story began in 2016 in a setting considerably less glamorous than their eventual wedding.

Georgina was working at a Gucci store in Madrid, reportedly earning around £10 an hour, when she first encountered Ronaldo. At the time, she had no idea that a chance meeting at the luxury boutique would eventually change the course of her life.

She later recalled being struck by the footballer when he entered the store with his eldest son and friends.

“I was finally able to leave the shop to go home three hours later than I should have and as I was getting ready to leave Cristiano came in with his eldest son and some friends,” she recalled.

“Let’s just say it was butterflies in my stomach.”

Their relationship quickly developed, and Ronaldo soon began collecting Georgina from work. The contrast between her arrival and departure was difficult for her colleagues to miss.

She travelled to work by bus but sometimes left in Ronaldo’s £1.5 million Bugatti.

“Many times he’d come after work,” Georgina later said in her Netflix series I Am Georgina. “I remember once, once in a Bugatti. My coworkers went crazy.”

The attention eventually became so intense that Georgina left her job in December 2016. A month later, the couple appeared together publicly at The Best FIFA Football Awards, effectively confirming what fans had already suspected.

Their Instagram debut as a couple followed in March 2017, when Ronaldo shared a photograph of himself cuddling Georgina on a sofa.

Their family grew rapidly.

Ronaldo’s twins Mateo and Eva were born via surrogacy in June 2017, while Georgina gave birth to their daughter Alana Martina later that year. Georgina subsequently became an important part of the wider family, helping raise Ronaldo’s children alongside him.

In 2022, the couple experienced their most devastating personal tragedy when they were expecting twins. Their baby boy died during childbirth, while his twin sister, Bella Esmeralda, survived.

The loss deeply affected both of them, but Ronaldo later explained that the experience also strengthened their relationship.

“We always support each other,” he said at the time. “Sometimes it’s like in a relationship you have good moments, bad moments, it is part of the journey.”

He described their daughter as bringing happiness back into the family home during an extraordinarily painful period.

The couple continued building their life together, and eventually the question of marriage became unavoidable.

For years, fans wondered why Ronaldo had not proposed. Even Georgina occasionally joked about the wait.

Ronaldo himself admitted last year that he had been waiting for the right moment.

“I always tell her, ‘when we get that click’,” he said, explaining that he believed marriage would happen eventually.

“It could be in a year or it could be six months or it could be in a month. I’m 1000 per cent sure that it’ll happen.”

That prediction eventually became reality.

In August, Ronaldo proposed with an enormous diamond ring, and Georgina shared the engagement news with her followers.

“Yes I do. In this and in all my lives,” she wrote alongside a photograph showing off the spectacular ring.

The proposal itself was considerably less choreographed than some might expect from one of the world’s most famous footballers.

Ronaldo later revealed that he had not actually planned to propose that particular night.

It was around 1am, his daughters were sleeping, and a friend had given him the ring. Then his children unexpectedly entered the room and effectively pushed the moment forward.

“My two kids come in and say, ‘Daddy, you’re going to give the ring to mum and you’re going to ask her to get married,'” Ronaldo recalled.

He decided that the moment was right.

“I knew that I was going to do it one day but I hadn’t planned to do it then,” he explained.

The proposal was not accompanied by an elaborate staged production or a perfectly choreographed public spectacle. Ronaldo admitted he did not even get down on one knee because he was unprepared.

But for the couple, that apparently made the moment more meaningful.

“It was beautiful and I knew that it’s the woman of my life so I did that and I hope that I did it well,” he said.

Ronaldo also revealed that Georgina had never been particularly interested in the size or cost of the engagement ring. What mattered to her was the commitment behind it.

Now that commitment has become official.

The decision to marry in a private civil ceremony appears particularly fitting given what Ronaldo has previously said about Georgina’s preferences.

When discussing their wedding plans, he joked that they might marry after the World Cup, ideally with the trophy in his hands. But he also acknowledged that Georgina was not someone who wanted an enormous celebration.

“She doesn’t like big parties,” Ronaldo said. “She likes private things. So I will respect these decisions.”

That is precisely what appears to have happened.

There was no giant public ceremony, no elaborate reveal and no prolonged buildup. Instead, Ronaldo and Georgina married with their children present and later shared the smallest possible confirmation with the world.

After meeting by chance in a Madrid luxury store in 2016, surviving years of public scrutiny, building a family together and enduring profound personal heartbreak, the couple have finally reached the moment fans have been waiting for.

The wedding may have been private, but its significance is enormous.
