A routine late-night pizza delivery ended in tragedy when a 28-year-old driver was gunned down moments after dropping off an order at a vacant apartment in North Philadelphia, leaving investigators searching for answers and a community shaken by another act of senseless violence.

Police say the victim had just completed what appeared to be a normal delivery in the early hours of Friday morning when he was ambushed and shot at close range outside a public housing complex. The killing has raised troubling questions about whether the driver was deliberately lured to the location and targeted as part of a planned robbery or setup.

The fatal shooting occurred shortly after 12:30 a.m. on June 6 at the Raymond Rosen Homes, a housing complex located along the 2300 block of Edgley Street in North Philadelphia. Officers rushed to the scene after receiving reports of gunfire in the area.

When police arrived, they discovered the victim lying on the ground with a severe gunshot wound to the head. Emergency responders immediately transported him to Temple University Hospital, where doctors attempted lifesaving measures. Despite their efforts, the young man was pronounced dead less than an hour later.

Authorities have not yet publicly released the victim’s identity, but investigators confirmed he was employed as a pizza delivery driver and was working at the time of the attack.

According to Chief Inspector Scott Small of the Philadelphia Police Department, detectives quickly began piecing together the victim’s final movements.

Investigators discovered that someone had placed a pizza order to an apartment unit inside the housing complex. However, as officers examined the scene more closely, they learned that the apartment was vacant.

“From looking at the pizza boxes, we were able to identify the pizza shop,” Small said as investigators worked to trace the circumstances surrounding the order.

Local reports identified the victim as an employee of Pete’s Pizza, a longtime Philadelphia-area restaurant.

Inside the vacant apartment, detectives found three pizza boxes and a delivery bag. The items appeared untouched, suggesting the driver had successfully completed the delivery before stepping back outside.

Evidence collected at the scene indicated the shooting happened only moments after the delivery was made.

Police recovered three spent shell casings near the victim’s body. The location of the shell casings provided an important clue about the nature of the attack.

“Which is an indication that the shooter or shooters were standing very, very close to the victim,” Small explained.

The evidence suggests the gunman was within just a few feet of the driver when the shots were fired.

Investigators are now examining whether the victim was confronted while returning to his vehicle or whether he was specifically targeted after exiting the apartment building.

The driver’s vehicle was located nearby, and officers found a pizza warmer still inside, indicating he had been in the middle of his work shift when the violence erupted.

Surveillance footage has also become a critical piece of the investigation.

Officials say cameras operated by the Philadelphia Housing Authority captured portions of the incident. While the actual shooting was not recorded, the footage reportedly shows the victim walking through the complex carrying pizza boxes shortly before his death.

More significantly, detectives say the video shows two individuals following the driver.

Both were dressed in dark clothing, according to investigators. One of them was carrying a dark-colored backpack.

The footage has provided detectives with valuable leads as they attempt to identify the suspects and determine whether the victim was being watched before the attack.

Police have not disclosed how long the individuals were following the driver or whether they appeared to be waiting for him before he arrived at the housing complex.
