Brady Harmon says he spent years receiving repeated notices from Child Protective Services about concerns involving the home where his four children lived, a revelation that adds another layer to the investigation into the deaths of six family members in Mechanicville, New York.

The father of Harper Harmon, 13, Hudson Harmon, 11, and 10-year-old twins Gavin and Gracelynn Harmon said he received approximately 10 letters from Saratoga County Child Protective Services over a three-year period informing him that the agency was investigating the children’s living conditions.

His comments come as authorities continue investigating what they believe was a murder-suicide involving the children’s grandmother, Amy Steadman, whose body was discovered alongside those of her daughter, Sarah Myers, and the four children inside Steadman’s apartment last week.

Police have not completed their investigation, and final autopsy and toxicology results are still pending. However, investigators have said evidence collected inside the apartment strongly suggests Steadman was responsible for the deaths.

Harmon, who lives in Utah, said he is still trying to piece together what happened during the years leading up to the tragedy.

According to Harmon, the Child Protective Services letters arrived periodically over the course of roughly three years. While he said he does not know who initially contacted the agency, he suspects the reports may have originated while his children were still enrolled in the Mechanicville City School District.

He noted that the letters stopped arriving after Sarah Myers withdrew the children from public school in 2024 and began homeschooling them.

Harmon said he is reluctant to release the documents publicly while detectives continue investigating the deaths.

He explained that he does not want to interfere with the ongoing criminal investigation or risk affecting any future findings by law enforcement.

Officials with Saratoga County have declined to comment on whether Child Protective Services had an active case involving the family, citing confidentiality rules surrounding child welfare investigations.

As a result, many questions about the agency’s involvement remain unanswered.

The renewed attention on CPS also comes against the backdrop of staffing concerns previously raised within Saratoga County.

In 2024, a county caseworker publicly warned that the department was operating with significantly fewer employees than recommended.

The employee said many investigators were carrying caseloads well above state guidelines because nearly half of the authorized caseworker positions remained vacant.

Although there has been no indication that staffing shortages affected this particular family, Harmon’s comments have prompted renewed discussion about child welfare resources and oversight.

The six victims were discovered after neighbors requested a welfare check when they realized they had not seen the family for several days.

Concern intensified after one neighbor noticed an unusual odor and large numbers of flies around Amy Steadman’s apartment.

Police responded to the apartment complex on Harris Avenue and entered the residence after receiving assistance from building management.

Inside, officers found the bodies of Steadman, her daughter Sarah Myers, and Myers’ four children.

Investigators later announced that evidence inside the apartment suggested an intentional poisoning had taken place.

Police also disclosed that one of the children appeared to have suffered fatal injuries from a sharp object.

Authorities have not publicly identified which child sustained those injuries, nor have they announced the official causes of death pending toxicology testing and medical examiner reports.

Mechanicville Police Chief William Rabbitt has repeatedly emphasized that investigators recovered evidence pointing toward Steadman’s involvement.

Among the items collected was a handwritten note that detectives believe is significant to understanding the case.

However, officials have declined to reveal its contents, saying releasing that information prematurely could compromise the investigation.

Police have also stated there is currently no evidence indicating anyone outside the family participated in the deaths.

Investigators continue working to establish an exact timeline, including determining precisely when the six victims died.

Chief Rabbitt previously explained that the condition of the bodies made immediate visual identification impossible, requiring autopsies before authorities could formally confirm each victim’s identity.

The apartment itself has since undergone extensive cleanup.

Earlier this week, specialized crews wearing protective equipment were seen working inside Steadman’s residence using industrial fans and other remediation equipment.

By that time, most belongings had reportedly been removed from the apartment.

Outside, however, reminders of the family remained.

Neighbor Stephanie Sweeney, who had grown close to Steadman over the previous four years, has continued caring for the grandmother’s tomato plants while also maintaining a memorial established outside the apartment.

The display includes candles, religious statues, flowers, stuffed animals and toys left in memory of the four children.

Sweeney has previously described the family as loving and kind, but now says discussing the tragedy has become emotionally overwhelming.

When approached outside the apartment this week, she quietly told reporters she could no longer speak about what had happened.

Instead, she focused on arranging the growing memorial as neighbors continued stopping by to pay their respects.

Sweeney has also explained that Myers had homeschooled the children during the past two years.

Neither school officials nor investigators have publicly explained why the children left public school.

Harmon now says obtaining his children’s educational records has become another priority.

He said he repeatedly requested access to school documents while custody proceedings were ongoing but claims he never received them despite provisions in the parenting agreement.

Now, following the deaths, he is attempting to locate those records himself in hopes they may help him better understand his children’s final years.

The custody dispute between Harmon and Myers had lasted several years.

According to Harmon, he had not seen his children in person since late 2019 following the couple’s separation.

Their divorce was finalized only recently, and the resulting parenting plan granted Harmon an extended summer visitation beginning July 1.

He had been preparing to welcome the children to Utah for a two-month stay that he hoped would rebuild their relationship after years apart.

Instead, only days before the scheduled reunion, police officers arrived at his home with devastating news.

Harmon has described the emotional shock of learning that his children had died before he ever had the opportunity to see them again.

He has repeatedly said he plans to bury all four children in Utah, where he lives.

Meanwhile, community members in Mechanicville continue mourning the family.

Over the weekend, friends and neighbors gathered at Tallmadge Park for a candlelight vigil organized by Sweeney.

She said the purpose of the gathering was to remember the victims for the lives they lived rather than solely for the tragic circumstances surrounding their deaths.

Children played quietly nearby as candles flickered and attendees offered prayers, flowers and messages of remembrance.

Many participants said they wanted the four young siblings to be remembered for their smiles and personalities rather than the horrific investigation that followed their deaths.

For investigators, however, many critical questions remain unanswered.

Toxicology testing has not yet established exactly how each victim died, and detectives continue examining evidence recovered from inside the apartment.

Police have indicated they will release additional information once forensic testing is complete.

Until then, the investigation remains active as authorities work to determine precisely what occurred inside the apartment during the family’s final days.

For Harmon, every new piece of information brings both answers and fresh questions.

As he awaits the conclusion of the investigation, he says he is focused on honoring his children, gathering records that document their lives, and preparing to lay them to rest after a reunion that never had the chance to happen.
