A quiet apartment building in upstate New York has become the center of a heartbreaking criminal investigation after police announced that a 64-year-old grandmother is believed to have played a role in the deaths of her daughter and four young grandchildren, whose bodies were discovered inside her home earlier this week.

Authorities in Mechanicville say the investigation remains active, but evidence collected at the scene has led detectives to suspect that Amy Steadman was involved in the deaths of six members of her own family. While final autopsy and toxicology results are still pending, investigators say the evidence points toward a combination of intentional poisoning and fatal injuries.

 

The grim discovery was made Tuesday evening after a concerned neighbor contacted police requesting a welfare check. According to Mechanicville Police Chief William Rabbitt, the neighbor had not seen Steadman for an extended period and became increasingly worried that something was wrong.

Officers responded to the apartment building on Harris Avenue but were unable to make contact with anyone inside the residence. After repeated attempts failed, building management granted officers access to the apartment.

“Upon entering the residence, officers located six deceased individuals,” Rabbitt said during a press conference outlining the investigation.

Inside the apartment, police found Steadman, her 44-year-old daughter Sarah Myers, and Myers’ four children: 13-year-old Harper Harmon, 11-year-old Hudson Harmon, and 10-year-old twins Gavin and Gracelynn Harmon.

The discovery immediately prompted a major criminal investigation involving local detectives, forensic specialists, and medical examiners.

Investigators later confirmed that the apartment belonged to Steadman. Myers and her four children lived elsewhere in the same apartment complex but had apparently been inside Steadman’s residence when they died.

Authorities believe the victims had been dead for what Chief Rabbitt described as “an extended period of time.”

The condition of the bodies was such that officers at the scene could not immediately identify all six victims. Formal identifications were completed following autopsies performed the following day.

Although investigators have not yet released official causes of death, they revealed several disturbing findings collected during their examination of the apartment.

According to police, one of the four children suffered fatal sharp-force injuries.

Officials have not publicly identified which child sustained those injuries out of respect for surviving relatives and because the investigation remains ongoing.

At the same time, detectives recovered what they described as evidence suggesting intentional poisoning inside the apartment.

Chief Rabbitt said investigators located numerous prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs that are believed to be significant pieces of evidence.

“There is recovered evidence inside the apartment indicating intentional poisoning,” Rabbitt explained.

Those medications have now been submitted for forensic testing as investigators work to determine whether they contributed to the deaths.

 

The medical examiner continues to conduct toxicology testing on all six victims before making official determinations regarding the cause and manner of death.

One of the most significant discoveries inside the apartment was a handwritten note.

Police have not released its contents, but Chief Rabbitt said the document strongly suggests Amy Steadman was involved in the deaths.

Investigators emphasized, however, that the note alone will not determine criminal responsibility.

“Final determination regarding responsibility will be made only after all investigative findings, toxicology results, and medical examiner reviews have been completed,” Rabbitt said.

At this stage, authorities have not identified any suspects outside the family.

Police said there is no evidence that another individual entered the apartment or participated in the deaths.

“There remains no indication that any outside individual was involved,” Rabbitt told reporters.

Investigators also stressed that there is currently no threat to the public.

The case has shocked residents throughout the small Saratoga County community, where neighbors described the discovery as almost impossible to comprehend.

The apartment complex remained surrounded by police tape for hours as investigators carefully documented every room and removed potential evidence.

Forensic teams continued processing the residence long after the bodies had been removed.

Neighbors said they had become increasingly concerned after not seeing members of the family for several days.

That concern ultimately led to the welfare check that uncovered one of the most devastating family tragedies the city has experienced in recent memory.

Authorities have released few additional details about the family’s recent circumstances.

Police confirmed only that the children’s father currently lives in Utah.

Chief Rabbitt also noted that the four children were homeschooled and were not enrolled in the local public school system.

Officials declined to discuss custody matters or family history, saying investigators remain focused on establishing exactly how each victim died.

As detectives reconstruct the family’s final days, forensic evidence will likely play the most significant role in determining what occurred inside the apartment.

Prescription bottles, medication containers, handwritten materials, electronic devices, and biological evidence collected from the residence are all being examined.

Investigators are also reviewing timelines to determine when each victim may have died and whether the deaths occurred simultaneously or over a longer period.
