Bonnie Tyler may have spent decades in the spotlight, but away from the stage the legendary Welsh singer lived a remarkably private life with her husband, Robert Sullivan.

The “Total Eclipse of the Heart” singer died unexpectedly on July 8, 2026, aged 75, leaving behind Sullivan, her husband of 53 years, as well as a large extended family and millions of fans around the world.

Tyler’s family and team announced her death in a heartbreaking statement published on her website, revealing that she had died in a hospital in Portugal while receiving treatment for an illness.

“Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for,” the statement said.

The news brought an end to a remarkable career that saw Tyler become one of the defining voices of the 1980s.

Her distinctive husky voice helped turn songs including “Holding Out for a Hero,” “It’s a Heartache” and “If You Were a Woman (And I Was a Man)” into international hits.
