The father of four children found dead alongside their mother and grandmother inside a New York apartment says he believes the heartbreaking tragedy happened just days before he was finally due to reunite with them after more than six years apart, as investigators continue trying to determine exactly how the family died.

Brady Harmon has spoken publicly for the first time since the bodies of his four children — 13-year-old Harper Harmon, 11-year-old Hudson Harmon, and 10-year-old twins Gavin and Gracelynn Harmon — were discovered inside a home in Mechanicville. Also found dead were the children’s mother, 44-year-old Sarah Myers, and their grandmother, 64-year-old Amy Steadman.

Police have not yet released final causes of death, but investigators say evidence recovered from inside the apartment points toward an intentional act. Authorities have also revealed that one of the children suffered fatal sharp-force injuries, while toxicology testing is underway after officers recovered numerous prescription and over-the-counter medications from the residence.

As the investigation continues, the children’s father has offered his own theory about what may have happened — though police have not confirmed his claims.

Speaking during an emotional interview, Harmon said he had been preparing for what he believed would be the first extended visit with his children in more than six years.

According to him, he had spent years fighting through family court proceedings and mediation in hopes of rebuilding a relationship with Harper, Hudson, Gavin and Gracelynn.

He said that after years of legal disputes with his former wife, he had finally been granted a 60-day summer visitation that would allow the children to travel to his home in Utah.

Instead, just days before that visit was due to begin, he learned that all four children had died.

“I’ve been fighting for so long to have access to them,” Harmon said, describing the loss as devastating beyond words.

He explained that he had already begun making plans for the summer.

The father hoped to introduce the children to family members they either barely knew or had never met. He wanted to take them camping, explore Utah’s famous national parks and monuments, and spend two months creating memories together after years of separation.

Now, he says those dreams have been permanently erased.

The tragedy came to light after Mechanicville police responded to a welfare check requested by a concerned neighbor.

According to investigators, the neighbor reported not seeing members of the family since early June.

Officers entered the apartment Tuesday evening and made the grim discovery.

Inside were the bodies of Amy Steadman, Sarah Myers and the four children.

Police later confirmed that the condition of the remains made identification difficult, suggesting the family had been dead for an extended period before they were found.

Authorities have not publicly stated exactly when they believe the deaths occurred.

Investigators are continuing to piece together the family’s final days through forensic evidence, interviews and toxicology testing.

Mechanicville Police Chief William Rabbitt has said investigators recovered evidence suggesting intentional poisoning inside the apartment.

Large quantities of prescription medication and over-the-counter drugs were reportedly found during the search.

However, officials stressed that toxicology testing remains incomplete.

Because of that, the official causes and manners of death for all six victims remain pending.

Autopsies determined that one of the four children suffered fatal injuries caused by a sharp object.

He believes the upcoming summer visitation may have played a role.

“I finally get 60 days,” he said. “And this gets thrown in my face.”

Harmon suggested that both women acted together because they did not want the children spending the summer with him.

Police have not confirmed those allegations.

Investigators have not publicly identified any suspect and have not announced whether they believe more than one person was involved.

During a press conference, Chief Rabbitt revealed that detectives recovered a note from inside the residence.

Without discussing its contents, he said the document strongly suggested Amy Steadman was responsible for what occurred.

Even so, investigators continue treating the case cautiously while awaiting laboratory testing.

Officials say no final determination will be made until toxicology reports and additional forensic examinations have been completed.

Police have repeatedly emphasized that the investigation remains active.

Not everyone close to the family agrees with the emerging theory.

John Bauman, Amy Steadman’s former husband, described her as a loving grandmother devoted to the children.

He said he found it impossible to believe she intentionally harmed them.

According to Bauman, the children were the center of Steadman’s life.

He said she constantly cared for them and did everything she could for their well-being.

“To me,” he said, “she had nothing even close to having anything to do with their deaths.”

His comments stand in stark contrast to the suspicions expressed by Harmon.

Investigators have not indicated whether either account aligns with the evidence collected so far.

Police have confirmed that all four children were being homeschooled.

Officials have not discussed when they were last seen alive or whether anyone outside the family had regular contact with them.

The welfare check that ultimately uncovered the deaths reportedly came after neighbors realized they had not seen anyone from the apartment for weeks.

As detectives continue searching for answers, six lives have been lost, a family has been shattered, and investigators face the difficult task of determining exactly what unfolded behind the closed doors of the apartment before anyone realized something had gone terribly wrong.
