Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s decision to move their family back to Britain after six years in California represents a remarkable turning point for the couple, who once appeared determined to build an entirely new life thousands of miles away from the Royal Family.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex arrived in America in 2020 with enormous expectations. They had global recognition, royal titles, celebrity connections and multimillion-dollar entertainment agreements that appeared to offer the foundations of a Hollywood empire.
Instead, their return to Britain now threatens to become a very different kind of statement.
Harry, 41, and Meghan, 45, are understood to be preparing to return to the UK for an extended period, with their children Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five, expected to attend a British school.
The family is reportedly expected to establish itself in a private, non-royal residence while retaining their £11million Montecito mansion and property in Portugal.
Crucially, there is no suggestion that Harry and Meghan are returning as working royals.
King Charles is understood to have been informed of the plans only recently, but is said to welcome the opportunity to spend more time privately with his son and grandchildren.
However, the Sussexes’ official position remains unchanged. They will continue as private individuals and non-working members of the Royal Family.
For a couple who once insisted that they wanted financial independence and freedom from the restrictions of royal life, the decision to put their children into British education is particularly striking.
When Harry and Meghan moved to California, they appeared to have secured exactly the future they wanted.
Their departure from Britain was followed by huge commercial deals, including a reported $100million Netflix agreement and a $20million Spotify contract.
Through Archewell Productions, they were expected to create documentaries, films, children’s programming and other entertainment projects.
Their first major Netflix release, Harry & Meghan, became a global talking point in 2022, with the couple using the six-part series to detail their experiences inside the Royal Family and explain why they had decided to leave.
Harry’s memoir, Spare, followed in January 2023 and became a publishing phenomenon, selling millions of copies around the world.
For a time, it appeared the Sussexes had discovered the perfect formula: royal revelations combined with Hollywood opportunities.
But the challenge was what came next.
Once the most explosive stories about their royal lives had been told, audiences had to decide whether they were equally interested in Harry and Meghan without the monarchy at the centre of the story.
Several projects struggled to make the same impact.
Netflix productions including Live to Lead, Heart of Invictus and Polo failed to generate anything close to the enormous attention surrounding Harry & Meghan.
Polo, in particular, struggled to make a significant impression, while other projects announced during the original Netflix partnership never reached screens.
The animated children’s project Pearl was cancelled, while a planned adaptation of Meet Me at the Lake also failed to materialise.
Spotify proved an even more difficult chapter.
Meghan’s Archetypes podcast ultimately produced a relatively limited number of episodes before Spotify and Archewell Audio parted ways in 2023.
The split was followed by an extraordinary public criticism from Spotify executive Bill Simmons, who famously used an expletive-filled description of the couple while discussing his experience of working with Harry.
Meghan later returned to podcasting through Lemonada Media with Confessions of a Female Founder, but the series did not recreate the enormous cultural impact of Archetypes or the couple’s earliest projects.
The Duchess also attempted to establish herself as a lifestyle entrepreneur.
In 2024, she unveiled American Riviera Orchard, a brand seemingly designed to capitalize on her California image and interest in cooking, entertaining and home life.
The launch was accompanied by polished social media content and celebrity gifts, including jars of jam sent to selected friends.
But the rollout dragged on, and the brand was eventually renamed As Ever.
The new venture launched products including preserves, teas and other lifestyle goods, with some items reportedly selling out.
Yet Meghan’s ambitions appeared considerably larger than simply selling jars of jam.
She had seemed to be positioning herself as a major lifestyle personality capable of building an empire comparable with some of America’s most successful female entrepreneurs.
That transformation has yet to happen on the scale once predicted.
Her Netflix lifestyle series With Love, Meghan provided another opportunity to reinvent herself, this time as a television host and domestic lifestyle expert.
The series ran for two seasons, but failed to become the cultural phenomenon that some had anticipated.
Then came another uncomfortable moment for the Sussexes when Cookie Queens, a documentary executive produced through Archewell Productions, reportedly struggled at the box office.
The project was even outperformed during its opening weekend by CatVideoFest 2026, a compilation built around viral cat footage.
The comparison was undeniably awkward for a couple whose Hollywood ambitions had once appeared almost limitless.
Yet Harry and Meghan remain hugely famous, and that distinction is important.
They continue to generate enormous media attention whenever they launch a project, make a public appearance or become involved in controversy.
The problem is that publicity does not necessarily translate into sustained commercial success.
Their return to Britain could therefore be interpreted as an admission that the California experiment has not produced the empire that was originally envisioned.
There is, however, another possible explanation.
Harry has repeatedly spoken about missing Britain, while sources close to him have suggested that he wants his children to experience more of his home country.
His recent reunion with King Charles appears to have strengthened those feelings.
Harry, Meghan, Archie and Lilibet reportedly spent time with the King at Highgrove, marking an important private reunion after years of tension.
The meeting was significant because Charles had not spent meaningful time with his grandchildren for an extended period.
Harry is also expected to continue his involvement with veterans’ causes and the Invictus Games, giving him a practical reason to maintain a stronger presence in Britain.
The Sussexes’ return therefore does not necessarily mean they have abandoned America.
They are expected to retain their Montecito property and their Portuguese residence, while continuing their commercial activities.
Instead, Britain may become another base for the family.
Nevertheless, the symbolism is impossible to ignore.
Six years ago, Harry and Meghan left Britain after making clear that they wanted to create a different kind of life.
They rejected the idea of a “half in, half out” royal existence and moved permanently to California.
Now they are preparing to bring their children back across the Atlantic and place them in a British school.
There is no indication that Harry and Meghan are seeking to become working royals again, and the King is reportedly clear that their status will not change.
But their return still represents a dramatic reversal of direction.
The couple arrived in California believing they could build an independent global empire outside the institution they had left behind.
They secured enormous deals, commanded unprecedented attention and appeared to have Hollywood at their feet.
But six years later, several major projects have disappeared, partnerships have ended and some of their most ambitious ventures have struggled to match the success of their earliest royal-focused releases.
Now, the Sussexes are coming home — not as senior royals, but as private citizens seeking a different future for their children.
Whether the move ultimately becomes permanent remains unknown.
What is clear is that the great California experiment has entered a new chapter.
And after everything Harry and Meghan have said about leaving Britain behind, their decision to return may prove to be the most revealing chapter of all.
