A North Carolina father was shot and killed after allegedly stepping in to protect his teenage daughter during a violent domestic dispute involving her boyfriend, authorities said.
Lester Jones, 47, died in the early hours of Monday, June 1, after police responded to a home on Bedlington Drive NW in Concord, where they found two people suffering from gunshot wounds, according to the Concord Police Department.
Officials said Jones had attempted to intervene when his 16-year-old daughter was allegedly attacked by her boyfriend inside the residence. The confrontation escalated into gunfire, leaving both father and daughter seriously injured.
Despite emergency response efforts, Jones was pronounced dead at the scene. His daughter was transported to hospital with severe injuries, where she remains under medical care, according to local reports.
The suspect, identified as 17-year-old Keshaun Degraffenreid, was arrested shortly after the shooting following a brief foot chase in the surrounding neighborhood.
Police said the incident began as a domestic argument that quickly escalated into violence inside the home. Investigators believe Degraffenreid and the teenage girl were in a romantic relationship prior to the shooting.
According to officials, the situation turned deadly when the argument allegedly became physical.
“The preliminary investigation indicates the suspect and 16-year-old victim were dating and had an argument that escalated into an assault,” the Concord Police Department said in a statement.
Authorities allege that Degraffenreid assaulted the girl before retrieving a 9mm handgun and opening fire inside the home. When Jones intervened to protect his daughter, he was struck multiple times.
Police said multiple rounds were fired during the incident, leaving both victims critically injured. Officers arriving at the scene described a chaotic and violent situation inside the residence.
Emergency responders attempted life-saving measures, but Jones was pronounced dead shortly after officers arrived. His daughter was rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment.
Neighbors later described hearing shouting and sudden gunfire erupt from the property in the early hours of the morning, followed by sirens and a heavy police presence.
The suspect allegedly fled the home immediately after the shooting but was apprehended nearby after officers established a perimeter in the area.
Degraffenreid, 17, has been charged as an adult in connection with the case. He faces multiple charges including first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, a domestic violence-related offense, resisting arrest, as well as separate drug-related charges.
Police also confirmed he was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia following his arrest.
Investigators said additional details about the events leading up to the shooting are still being reviewed, including the history of the relationship between the suspect and the teenage victim.
Court records indicate Degraffenreid made his first appearance shortly after being taken into custody. He is currently being held at the Cabarrus County Jail without bond and is scheduled to return to court later this month.
As the investigation continues, the case has sparked renewed concern in the Concord community about youth violence and access to firearms.
Residents who live near the home described the tragedy as both shocking and heartbreaking, particularly given the ages of those involved and the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
One neighbor, Josh Elmore, said Jones acted instinctively to protect his daughter and paid the ultimate price.
“A father made the ultimate sacrifice for his daughter to protect her,” he said. “This father cared. He clearly did because he gave his life up, and we all should have that level of care for our children.”
Another neighbor, Antonio Brown, questioned how the situation escalated to the point of gunfire involving a teenager.
“A 17-year-old is still a child,” he said. “He shouldn’t have a gun. Why would he have a gun? That’s scary…”
Police officials have not yet released information about how the suspect obtained the firearm allegedly used in the shooting.

Investigators are also working to determine whether there were any prior reports of domestic disturbances involving the couple before the fatal incident.
The Concord Police Department said officers were called to the residence at approximately 12:29 a.m. after multiple emergency calls reported gunfire in the area.
When officers arrived, they discovered both victims inside the home suffering from gunshot wounds consistent with a close-range shooting.
Authorities believe the violence unfolded rapidly, leaving little time for intervention before shots were fired.
The suspect was taken into custody without further incident after being located a short distance from the scene.
The shooting has left the community grappling with the loss of a father described by neighbors as protective and family-oriented, while a teenager now faces the prospect of a lengthy criminal trial.
Community members have begun calling for greater awareness of teen dating violence and improved intervention measures in domestic disputes involving minors.
For Jones’s family, however, the focus remains on mourning a man who, according to those who knew him, stepped in without hesitation to protect his child.
As the legal process moves forward, prosecutors are expected to present evidence detailing the sequence of events that led to the fatal confrontation inside the Concord home.
Degraffenreid remains in custody as investigators continue gathering witness statements, forensic evidence, and digital records related to the case.
No trial date has yet been announced, and authorities say the investigation remains ongoing as they work to establish a complete timeline of the shooting.
The tragedy has added to growing national concerns about youth-involved gun violence and the dangers of domestic conflicts escalating into deadly encounters.
For now, a family is left grieving a father’s loss, a teenager is recovering from serious injuries, and a community is searching for answers about how a domestic argument ended in gunfire and irreversible loss.
