A 25-year-old bus driver was shot dead outside a London pub while reportedly dropping off his girlfriend, leaving his family and friends devastated as detectives investigate what witnesses described as a possible case of mistaken identity.

Police and paramedics were called to the Landor pub on Landor Road in Clapham shortly before 10pm on Monday, August 10, following reports of gunfire.

When emergency crews arrived, they found the young man suffering from gunshot wounds outside the pub.

Despite paramedics reaching the scene within around three minutes, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 22-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of murder after arriving at hospital with a gunshot wound.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation, and police have not confirmed a motive.

However, people who knew the victim said he may have been caught up in an attack intended for someone else.

One witness claimed the shooting was a case of mistaken identity, while another person reportedly heard someone believed to be a relative of the victim shouting, “They got the wrong boy.”

A friend described the victim as a “cool guy” and said his death had left those who knew him struggling to understand what had happened.

“It’s shocking because of who he is and his character,” the friend said, adding that the death was “going to hurt a lot of people”.

Another family member said relatives had been left “shattered” by the sudden loss.

“I was due to see him at a birthday party on Saturday. We are devastated,” they said.

The young man’s death has also prompted an emotional response from people who had known him since childhood.

One former friend said they had played together as children in a nearby park, just around 100 metres from where he was killed.

Another friend said the community was struggling with grief following the shooting.

“It’s been hectic, everyone’s very hot headed right now, everyone’s obviously grieving,” the friend said.

They added that they felt particularly sorry for the victim’s mother, who was described as being devastated by the loss.

The shooting happened as the area was busy with people visiting the pub and surrounding streets.

Residents reported hearing a series of loud bangs shortly before emergency vehicles arrived.

One local resident said they initially believed the sounds might have been fireworks.

“I heard four pops. I thought it was fireworks, but then an ambulance pulled up outside my flat,” the resident said.

Another resident recalled hearing what they believed were several gunshots before seeing someone run from the area.

The witness said the person shouted for police to be called.

They also reported seeing a moped and a white car leave the area before officers arrived.

Outside the pub, people could reportedly be heard screaming and crying in the aftermath of the shooting.

The scene remained cordoned off into Tuesday as detectives and forensic officers worked to establish exactly what happened.

A forensic tent was erected close to the road, while police vehicles and tape restricted access to parts of Landor Road and nearby Willington Road.

Bouquets of flowers were later placed near the entrance to the pub, alongside a candle left in memory of the victim.

Staff at The Landor are understood to have helped the injured man following the shooting before emergency services took over.

The response involved a London Ambulance Service trauma team, an incident response officer and paramedics travelling in fast-response vehicles.

A trauma team from London’s Air Ambulance was also sent to the scene.

The emergency response reflected the seriousness of the injuries, but despite efforts to save the victim, he died at the location.

Police have been examining the circumstances before, during and after the shooting.

Forensic investigators were reportedly examining an Audi believed to have been driven by the victim. The vehicle was seen with a smashed driver’s-side window, although investigators have not publicly confirmed how the damage occurred or whether it was directly connected to the shooting.

Detectives are also expected to review CCTV footage from the pub and surrounding streets, while officers continue speaking with witnesses who may have seen vehicles or people leaving the area.

The arrest of a 22-year-old suspect represents a significant development in the investigation, although police have not publicly disclosed the circumstances surrounding his arrest.

The suspect had reportedly arrived at a hospital suffering from a gunshot wound. It was not immediately clear how he sustained the injury or whether it was connected directly to the circumstances that led to the victim’s death.

The victim’s friends and relatives are now left trying to understand why a young man who had apparently been carrying out an ordinary journey ended up becoming the victim of a fatal shooting.

According to those close to him, he had reportedly been dropping his girlfriend off at the pub when the gunfire erupted.

That account has contributed to speculation that he may not have been the intended target.

However, detectives have yet to establish publicly whether mistaken identity played any role, and investigators will need to determine what happened before drawing conclusions about the motive.

The possibility has nevertheless intensified the sense of shock among local residents.

One woman living nearby said the incident had made her reconsider remaining in London.

“It’s sad what happened, that someone lost a life,” she said, adding that she had told her daughter she wanted to move.

The reaction reflects broader concern among residents following a shooting in an area where people were going about their normal evening routines.

Police said an increased presence would remain in the area while inquiries continue.

Detective Chief Superintendent Emma Bond, Central South Borough Commander, acknowledged the concern caused by the incident and appealed directly to anyone who might have information.

“We understand that incident will cause concern within the local community and an increased police presence will remain in the area throughout the day as our enquiries continue,” she said.

“Our thoughts remain with the victim’s family for their tragic loss.”

She confirmed that officers had arrested a man on suspicion of murder and said detectives were working to establish what happened.

“We are asking anyone with information or anyone who may have witnessed the shooting to please contact us as soon as possible and support the ongoing investigation,” she added.

The London Ambulance Service confirmed that it had been called at 9.59pm on Monday following reports of a shooting on Landor Road.

As detectives continue their work, the victim’s family is facing the difficult task of coming to terms with a death that friends described as sudden and deeply painful.

For those who knew him, the details of the investigation are secondary to the loss of a young man who, according to friends, was remembered for his personality and the relationships he had built over the years.

Flowers and a candle outside the pub now mark the place where his life ended.

Police remain keen to hear from anyone who was in the Landor Road or Willington Road area around the time of the shooting, particularly motorists, pedestrians or anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage.

Investigators will now seek to piece together the movements of the victim, the arrested man and anyone else who may have been involved.

Until that evidence has been examined, questions over why the shooting happened, whether the victim was deliberately targeted and whether mistaken identity played a role remain unanswered.

What is clear is that a 25-year-old man who had reportedly stopped at the pub while dropping off his girlfriend was fatally caught in a violent incident that has left his family grieving and the local community searching for answers.
