The British driver controlled the early stages of the race, showed impressive pace on the medium tyres, and appeared capable of keeping Lewis Hamilton’s charging Ferrari at bay. Around the Mercedes garage, there was growing belief that Barcelona could become the race where the Silver Arrows returned to the top step of the podium.
Instead, Russell crossed the finish line almost 20 seconds behind Hamilton.
At first glance, the result appeared to be a consequence of Ferrari’s superior strategy execution and Hamilton’s relentless pace. However, Mercedes have now revealed that an unexpected mistake during Russell’s final pit stop significantly altered the course of his race.
