McLaren Prepared to Sacrifice 2026 Title Push for Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri as Crucial Baku Upgrade Package Prepares to Decide 2027 Strategy
Reigning Formula One constructors’ champions McLaren are standing at a major strategic crossroads regarding the development of their 2026 challenger, with technical chief Neil Houldey confirming that a “significant” upgrade package scheduled for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku will determine whether the team sacrifices further 2026 development to focus on 2027. The Woking-based outfit entered the 2026 campaign riding high after securing back-to-back constructors’ titles and guiding British star Lando Norris to his maiden drivers’ World Championship in 2025. However, those historic triumphs arrived at the sunset of the ground-effect era, and McLaren initially found themselves on the back foot as they struggled to adapt to the sport’s sweeping new 2026 technical regulations.

The early-season woes for McLaren were largely self-inflicted, stemming from a fundamental design choice on the MCL40. The decision to construct the chassis with a noticeably shorter wheelbase proved to be an engineering misstep, causing the car to suffer from a severe lack of overall downforce compared to the aerodynamic concepts fielded by rival teams. It took until round 11 at the Hungarian Grand Prix for Norris to deliver McLaren’s very first pole position and Grand Prix victory under the new regulations, showcasing that recent development steps have begun to unlock the car’s latent potential. Now, technical leadership is preparing to evaluate whether continued investment in the current machinery makes sense as the championship approaches its crucial autumn phase.
Hungarian Grand Prix Breakthrough and the Baku Upgrade Roadmap
The breakthrough performance at the Hungaroring provided a massive psychological boost for McLaren, as Norris claimed pole position before commanding the race to secure a dominant victory. Teammate Oscar Piastri was also in contention for the top step of the podium, but his race was undone after being held up by Carlos Sainz—who ignored blue flags while being lapped—before a subsequent gearbox failure forced the Australian to retire, preventing him from challenging Norris for the win. Despite the mixed fortunes on Piastri’s side of the garage, the overall pace demonstrated that McLaren’s recent aerodynamic revisions were finally bearing fruit on track.
Speaking on the team’s official website, Neil Houldey, McLaren’s Technical Director of Applied Engineering, outlined the team’s post-summer development roadmap. McLaren plans to introduce minor, incremental upgrades across the immediate races following the summer break before unleashing a major, “significant” development package in Baku for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The performance data gathered from this Baku package will act as the ultimate catalyst, dictating whether McLaren continues to funnel engineering resources into the MCL40 or fully shifts its focus toward designing their 2027 challenger.
“It really will depend on whether we find something substantial in aero after the summer break, and whether we think there’s value in doing an end-of-season package or fully switch to next year’s car. It’s an open point at the moment,” Neil Houldey explained.
“We’ll be looking at where we are, where our competitors are, and where we see the opportunities. I think there’s a good chance we’ll have upgrades beyond Baku that can dig more performance out of this car, without impacting 2027. It’ll be things that can be bolted-on, or bonded-on, rather than the big, wholesale bodywork upgrades, but still areas in which there’s good performance opportunities there for the taking,” Houldey added.
Balancing 2026 Realities with 2027 Development and Regulatory Carryover
While McLaren engineers are already deeply immersed in the initial design phases of their 2027 car, executive management has not yet made the definitive call to completely abandon further development of the 2026 challenger. The technical insights gathered from testing the MCL40’s upcoming upgrades after the summer break will play a fundamental role in shaping the architectural path for the 2027 project. Because Formula One and the FIA are expected to implement only minor technical regulation tweaks for next season, a substantial amount of aerodynamic and mechanical learning can be directly carried over from the current car to next year’s model.

However, specific technical loopholes are already slated for elimination by the governing body. Formula One officials have drawn up plans for 2027 to officially ban blown exhaust flaps—a concept pioneered by Ferrari in 2026—while also clamping down on complex actuator fairings. McLaren was among several teams that took advantage of novel wing mechanics this season, utilizing specialized rear wing actuators at the Monaco Grand Prix to generate extra downforce, while Ferrari debuted radical actuator fairing winglets in Hungary.
Since the core structural and aerodynamic regulations will remain largely stable heading into next season, any engineering effort spent refining the 2026 chassis will still yield valuable data for 2027. Nevertheless, as Houldey emphasized, McLaren must soon make a definitive strategic calculation on when to officially pull the plug on the 2026 package, ensuring Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are armed with a championship-winning car from the very first race of 2027.
