Lando Norris Receives Praise for Champion-Level Performance at Hungarian Grand Prix

Lando Norris has received widespread recognition for his impressive victory at the Hungarian Grand Prix, with former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard describing the McLaren star’s performance as the type of display expected from a genuine world champion.

Speaking on the Up To Speed podcast alongside co-host Jolie Sharpe, Coulthard analysed the current Formula 1 season as the championship approached its mandatory August summer break. The former Red Bull driver highlighted Norris’ outstanding weekend at the Hungaroring, where the British driver delivered a dominant performance to claim the first Grand Prix victory of the year for both himself and McLaren.

The win represented a significant turning point for Norris, who had endured a challenging beginning to his 2026 title defence. Early-season reliability problems and a lack of pace compared with key rivals such as Mercedes and Ferrari had prevented McLaren from reaching its full potential.

However, the team’s situation improved dramatically after introducing a series of technical upgrades. The developments helped McLaren close the gap to its competitors and allowed Norris to demonstrate the speed and consistency that made him a championship contender.

At the Hungarian Grand Prix, Norris produced a remarkable qualifying performance, securing pole position by an extremely small margin of just 0.012 seconds ahead of Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton. The result showed the competitiveness of McLaren and highlighted Norris’ ability to perform under pressure.

The race itself was not completely straightforward. Norris briefly lost the lead to his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri after the start, creating the possibility of an intense battle between the two drivers. However, the situation changed when Piastri encountered problems later in the race.

While attempting to pass Williams driver Carlos Sainz, who was being lapped, Piastri made contact with the Spaniard’s car. The incident damaged his race and eventually forced him to retire because of a gearbox issue.

With Piastri out of contention, Norris took control of the Grand Prix. He maintained a strong pace throughout the remaining laps, managed the race effectively and crossed the finish line comfortably to secure victory.

Coulthard praised Norris’ complete performance throughout the weekend, highlighting not only the final result but also the way he handled every stage of the event.

He described Norris’ achievement as an example of a “true world champion performance”, suggesting that the McLaren driver demonstrated the qualities required to succeed at the highest level of Formula 1.

According to Coulthard, Norris showed confidence, maturity and control during the entire weekend before entering the summer break. The former F1 driver believed the victory demonstrated why Norris should be considered among the leading drivers of his generation.

Coulthard also commented on Norris’ reputation outside racing. During a press conference before the summer break, drivers were asked about their holiday plans, and many appeared to look towards Norris because of his public image as one of the more relaxed and social personalities on the grid.

The British driver has often been portrayed as the “party-loving” member of the Formula 1 community, although Coulthard suggested that this reputation may not fully reflect Norris’ personality or professional approach.

He jokingly noted that Norris had developed a certain image among fans and media, but admitted that this perception might be somewhat unfair considering the driver’s dedication and commitment to racing.

Norris’ Hungarian Grand Prix victory was especially important because it came during a season where McLaren had struggled to match expectations. The result provided renewed confidence for the team and proved that their upgrades had successfully improved the car’s performance.

The victory also strengthened Norris’ position as a serious championship contender. Although he remained behind several rivals in the standings after the first half of the season, his recent form suggested that the title battle could become much closer during the remaining races.

Following the opening part of the campaign, Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli led the drivers’ championship with 219 points. Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton occupied second place with 169 points, while Mercedes driver George Russell followed in third with 160 points.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc ranked fourth with 138 points, while Norris completed the top five with 128 points. Despite the points gap, Norris’ improved performance and McLaren’s recent progress indicated that the championship fight was far from decided.

The Hungarian Grand Prix victory served as a reminder of Norris’ ability to deliver when both driver and team are operating at their best. His speed in qualifying, composure during the race and ability to manage pressure were all qualities associated with championship-winning drivers.

For McLaren, the result provided a major boost heading into the summer break. After facing early difficulties, the team now appears to have regained momentum and could play a significant role in the second half of the season.

Coulthard’s praise reflects the growing respect Norris has earned throughout the Formula 1 world. Once viewed as a talented driver still searching for his first major breakthrough, Norris is increasingly being recognised as a complete competitor capable of fighting for the sport’s biggest prize.
