Lando Norris Warns F1 Drivers: “If You Can’t Adapt, You’re Not Good Enough” as 2026 Cars Transform Driving Styles
Formula 1 drivers are facing one of the biggest technical adjustments in recent years as the sport prepares for a new generation of cars in 2026. The upcoming regulations, particularly the complicated energy management systems, are forcing drivers to rethink how they approach races, qualifying laps, and even individual corners.
The new era of Formula 1 machinery has introduced a much greater focus on energy recovery and deployment. Unlike previous generations, where drivers could rely more heavily on traditional braking techniques and mechanical grip, the 2026 cars require a deeper understanding of how to manage electrical power throughout a lap. This has created a significant mental and technical challenge for drivers, especially when attacking high-speed corners.
Some drivers have admitted that adapting to the new style of driving has not been easy. Mercedes driver George Russell, for example, has struggled at times to find the ideal balance with his car, while his younger teammate Kimi Antonelli has appeared to adapt more naturally and has been able to extract stronger performances from the machinery.
However, Lando Norris believes adapting to change is simply part of being a Formula 1 driver. The McLaren star showed little sympathy for drivers who struggle to adjust, arguing that adaptability is one of the most important qualities required at the highest level of motorsport.
Speaking during the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend, Norris explained that changing his driving approach has been a constant throughout his career.
“I’ve had to change my driving style every single year of my life,” Norris said. “For some drivers, their style has worked for many years, but that has not been the case for me. The way I drove during my first testing year in 2018 was probably the last time my natural style worked perfectly. Since then, I’ve always had to adjust.”
The McLaren driver emphasized that Formula 1 is not about forcing a car to match a driver’s preferences. Instead, he believes elite drivers must be capable of adapting themselves to whatever machine they are given.
According to Norris, experience should make drivers better equipped to handle change rather than more resistant to it.
“The more experience you gain in Formula 1, the better prepared you should be,” he explained. “If you cannot adapt to a different car, then you are not operating at the level you need to be. This is our responsibility. We are paid millions to drive whatever car is placed in front of us—whether it is fast, slow, easy, or difficult.”
Norris himself has experienced the difficulties of adapting. During the early part of the 2025 season, he struggled to maximize the performance of his McLaren, particularly during qualifying sessions where extracting the final few tenths of a second proved challenging. Through adjustments to both his driving technique and his understanding of the car, he was able to recover and return to championship contention.
However, Norris said that learning never stops, especially with the arrival of the 2026 regulations.
“Every race weekend at the moment feels like I have to forget what happened the previous weekend and learn how to drive a completely different car,” he explained. “Every driver has their own approach, but my entire career in Formula 1 has been about adapting my driving style from one season to the next.”
The complexity of the new energy systems has become one of the biggest talking points surrounding the 2026 cars. The power units depend heavily on sophisticated software and machine-learning systems to manage energy deployment efficiently. Because of this, small mistakes or slight variations in a driver’s approach can have a major impact on performance.
A tiny difference in how a driver exits a corner can affect the energy available on the following straight, potentially costing several tenths of a second. This has frustrated some drivers, who feel that performance is becoming increasingly influenced by technology rather than pure driving ability.
McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri previously compared the situation to having qualifying results determined partly by whether computer systems behave correctly. The feeling among some drivers is that unpredictable energy management can make results appear less connected to driver skill.
Norris acknowledged those frustrations but disagreed with the suggestion made by some, including Max Verstappen, that drivers now have less influence over the outcome of races.
“You absolutely can still make the difference,” Norris said. “Some corners may become less important because of the way the cars work, and the field might become closer, but a better driver will still find advantages. Most corners are still opportunities to gain time compared with your competitors.”
Norris believes that although technology has changed the nature of performance, driver skill remains a crucial factor. He argued that talented drivers will always discover ways to extract more from a car than their rivals.
The reduced aerodynamic levels of the 2026 cars may actually create new opportunities for drivers to demonstrate their abilities, particularly at medium-speed corners.
At extremely fast circuits such as Silverstone and Spa-Francorchamps, Norris admitted that the number of corners where drivers can create a significant advantage may decrease because many sections are dominated by energy management and top speed.
However, he believes other tracks will highlight driver ability even more.
“At the fastest circuits, there are fewer places where you can gain lap time,” Norris explained. “But on a circuit like this, I think it is completely different. Some corners will actually become bigger challenges than before because the cars are entering them at higher speeds while having less grip.”
According to Norris, this combination of higher speed and reduced downforce will put greater pressure on drivers. Instead of simply relying on aerodynamic performance, drivers will need confidence, precision, and the ability to manage difficult situations.
He believes that these conditions could actually increase the difference between the best drivers and the rest of the field.
The upcoming Formula 1 regulations are expected to reshape the competitive landscape. Teams will need to master not only traditional engineering areas such as aerodynamics and chassis development but also advanced energy strategies and software optimization.
For drivers, the challenge will be equally demanding. They will need to understand complex systems, adapt their techniques, and continuously evolve throughout the season.
Norris’s message is clear: Formula 1 has always rewarded those who can adapt. Whether the challenge comes from changing tires, new aerodynamic rules, or revolutionary power units, the best drivers are those who can quickly adjust and find performance wherever it exists.
As the sport enters a new technological era, the ability to learn, adapt, and overcome challenges may become just as important as raw speed. For Norris, that ability is not optional—it is what separates the best drivers from everyone else.
