Lindsay Clancy Trial: Patrick Clancy Describes Ex-Wife’s Mental Health Struggles and Disturbing Thoughts Before Children’s Deaths

Patrick Clancy delivered emotional testimony during the opening day of Lindsay Clancy’s murder trial, providing jurors with a detailed account of his former wife’s mental health struggles in the months before the deaths of their three children.

Lindsay Clancy, a Massachusetts mother from Duxbury, is accused of killing her three young children in 2023. She faces three counts of murder related to the deaths of her five-year-old daughter Cora, three-year-old son Dawson, and eight-month-old son Callan.

She has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Following the tragedy, Lindsay attempted to take her own life and suffered severe injuries that left her paralyzed from the waist down. Her defense team has argued that she was experiencing postpartum psychosis at the time and should not be considered legally responsible for her actions.

Patrick Clancy, Lindsay’s former husband and the father of the three children, was the first witness called by prosecutors. His testimony became a major focus of the trial because he provided insight into Lindsay’s behavior, emotional condition, and the events leading up to the deaths.

Patrick Describes Lindsay’s Final Days Before the Tragedy

During his testimony, Patrick described the final day he spent with his children before their deaths.

He told jurors that January 24, 2023, appeared to begin like a normal day. The couple exchanged photographs of their children, including one of Dawson proudly showing off that he had dressed himself.

According to Patrick, Lindsay appeared happy and seemed to be in a positive mood that day.

He described her as having “one of her best days,” suggesting that there were no obvious signs that something terrible was about to happen.

Patrick also reflected on the births of each of their children and explained how Lindsay’s emotional difficulties developed over time.

He said she struggled with anxiety, particularly when facing the possibility of returning to work after maternity leave.

Lindsay’s Mental Health Decline After Third Child

Patrick testified that Lindsay’s mental health became increasingly difficult after the birth of their youngest child, Callan.

She reportedly struggled with anxiety, depression, and severe sleep problems.

At one point, Lindsay asked to begin taking medication to help manage her depression.

Patrick explained that she initially started taking Zoloft, an antidepressant, but later stopped because her sleep problems became worse.

“She took it for a period of time, and her sleep started to suffer, so she stopped taking it,” he told the court.

Patrick said Lindsay only took seven pills from the Zoloft prescription before changing medical providers.

Afterward, he noticed that his wife was receiving multiple medications from different doctors and healthcare professionals as she continued seeking treatment.

Concerns Over Multiple Medications

During questioning, Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Sprague showed Patrick a plastic bag containing several prescription bottles that belonged to Lindsay.

She asked whether he knew that his wife had only taken a small number of pills from some of the bottles.

Patrick said he was not aware of that detail.

However, he explained that some medications had been adjusted or changed as doctors attempted to find a treatment that worked for her condition.

The issue of medication is expected to become an important part of the trial because the defense has argued that Lindsay’s psychiatric condition was worsened by improper treatment and medication combinations.

Lindsay’s “Big Spiral” in December 2022

Patrick testified that Lindsay experienced a significant decline in December 2022, describing it as the beginning of her “big spiral.”

During this period, Lindsay reportedly expressed suicidal thoughts and talked about fears involving harm coming to their children.

Patrick explained that she did not describe a specific plan to hurt the children, but she mentioned disturbing thoughts.

“The way she was describing it was that something might happen to the kids,” he said.

He testified that Lindsay told him she felt as though she was becoming dependent on or “addicted” to some of the medications she had been prescribed.

Because of her worsening condition, the couple asked Lindsay’s parents to come stay with them and provide additional support.

Despite her troubling statements, Patrick said he was not concerned that she would physically harm their children.

“She wasn’t showing any intention of harming the kids,” he told jurors.

Attempts to Seek Professional Help

As Lindsay’s mental health struggles continued, she sought emergency care at Massachusetts General Hospital after expressing suicidal thoughts.

Doctors recommended that she participate in a specialized postpartum mental health program in Rhode Island.

However, Patrick testified that medical providers later determined the program was not suitable for Lindsay’s needs.

The couple continued searching for help.

Patrick explained that Lindsay remained active in daily family life during this period. She continued exercising, attending appointments with the children, and participating in normal routines.

He said that in the weeks before the tragedy, she was still involved in caring for their children.

Admission to McLean Hospital

After another visit to Massachusetts General Hospital, Lindsay was eventually admitted to McLean Hospital on January 1, 2023, for psychiatric treatment.

The hospitalization came after continued concerns about her mental state and suicidal thoughts.

The defense is expected to argue that Lindsay’s admission to psychiatric care demonstrates the seriousness of her condition and the need for better intervention.

Prosecutors, however, are expected to examine whether Lindsay followed medical recommendations and whether her actions were the result of a mental illness or a deliberate choice.
