“My wife’s not being able to go to work because she works within the public and she’s scared,” Fletcher explained. The threats have had a direct financial impact, as the family can no longer maintain their regular routines. “All this is taking money off our table because we can’t live our normal lives,” he added. The constant fear has isolated them from the community they once felt part of.

Despite the intense scrutiny and hostility, Fletcher stressed that he and his relatives would have intervened immediately if they had known the true extent of the children’s suffering. He admitted believing there were only about 10 children living in the home, not the 16 who were ultimately discovered in appalling conditions. “If we would have known that it was like that in that home, we would have done something about it,” he said firmly. This could have included personally removing the children or providing financial help. He added that female relatives would have gone over to clean the house themselves had they been aware of the filth and neglect.

The case came to light when law enforcement officers arrived at the Siders family home to serve a warrant related to an unrelated matter. What they found shocked even seasoned investigators: 16 children confined primarily to a single cramped 12-by-12 room inside a small five-room house. The living space was littered with trash, debris, and feces, creating unsanitary and dangerous conditions. Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson described the scene as unimaginable, noting that investigators had to wear masks due to the overwhelming stench and filth. The couple married in West Virginia when Elizabeth was just 15 years old, only two months before their oldest child was born.
