A 7-year-old girl on Long Island died last year after suffering what prosecutors describe as months of “systematic cruelty and sadistic abuse,” with investigators alleging she was left untreated despite extensive injuries that ultimately led to a fatal infection.

Jor’Dynn Duncan was found unresponsive in December 2025 after emergency responders were called to a Bayport residence. She was later pronounced dead at a hospital. A subsequent autopsy revealed she died from a severe untreated infection caused by sharp force injuries, and medical examiners documented approximately 90 separate wounds across her body.

The case has since evolved into a major criminal prosecution involving three women from the same extended family, all of whom have been indicted in connection with the child’s death and have pleaded not guilty.

Authorities say the allegations surrounding Jor’Dynn’s final months reveal a prolonged pattern of escalating abuse that went unnoticed or unreported despite warning signs, including repeated school absences and inconsistent explanations given to officials.

Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney said in a statement that the evidence gathered so far paints a disturbing picture of prolonged suffering. Investigators allege the child endured repeated injuries over several months while in the custody of her father’s fiancée, Emily Kelly, who had been granted legal guardianship earlier in 2025.

Kelly, 50, was responsible for Jor’Dynn’s care after child protective services placed the child in her home following concerns about her biological parents’ circumstances. Prosecutors say that arrangement ultimately placed the child in an environment where she was allegedly subjected to ongoing abuse.

According to the indictment, Kelly is accused of acting alongside her mother, 75-year-old Barbara Renner, and her 24-year-old daughter, Elyssa Seymore, in what prosecutors describe as coordinated acts of violence and neglect.

Investigators allege that evidence recovered from digital devices belonging to Kelly includes photographs and videos documenting injuries and distress over time. Prosecutors say the materials show a pattern of restraint, visible trauma, and a failure to seek medical care even as the child’s condition worsened.

Officials also claim that the abuse was not a single isolated incident, but rather a sustained course of conduct beginning months before the child’s death. The investigation suggests that injuries were repeatedly inflicted and left untreated, eventually resulting in a life-threatening infection.

Authorities say Jor’Dynn was frequently absent from school during the months leading up to her death. Records indicate she missed approximately 40 school days between January and June 2025. Prosecutors allege that fabricated excuses were provided to school officials, including claims of illness, family emergencies, and even a vacation, in an effort to conceal what was happening inside the home.

District Attorney Tierney described the case in stark terms, calling it a prolonged period of cruelty that ended in tragedy.

“This was not a single act of violence,” he said. “It was months of alleged systematic cruelty and sadistic abuse, meticulously documented. The child was allegedly left to die while these defendants watched her deteriorate.”

Emergency responders were called to the residence on December 29, 2025, after Kelly reportedly dialed 911 stating that the child was in cardiac arrest. Paramedics attempted life-saving measures before transporting Jor’Dynn to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly afterward.

The autopsy findings, which identified severe infection and multiple sharp force injuries, triggered an immediate homicide investigation by the Suffolk County Police Department.

As the case progressed, investigators obtained search warrants and examined electronic devices and cloud-based accounts belonging to those involved. Prosecutors say the digital evidence is central to their case, allegedly showing documentation of injuries and neglect over an extended period.

All three defendants were formally indicted on Wednesday in state Supreme Court. Kelly faces charges including second-degree murder, reckless endangerment, and unlawful imprisonment, along with multiple counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

Her mother, Barbara Renner, has been charged with second-degree manslaughter and endangering the welfare of a child. Prosecutors allege she had involvement in the environment in which the abuse occurred.

Renner’s attorney has denied the allegations, stating that she suffers from dementia and was not the child’s caregiver.

“She has no criminal history, was not the caregiver of this child, and did not cause her tragic death,” attorney Danielle Coysh said in a statement.

Kelly’s daughter, Elyssa Seymore, faces charges of unlawful imprisonment and endangering the welfare of a child. Her attorney did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

At arraignment, all three women pleaded not guilty. The court set bail conditions that reflect the severity of the charges, with Kelly held on $5 million cash bail or $10 million bond, Renner on $50,000 cash or secured bond, and Seymore on $25,000 cash or bond.

Defense attorney John LoTurco, representing Kelly, rejected the prosecution’s characterization of the events, calling the child’s death a tragic accident rather than intentional harm.

He stated that Kelly “deeply cared for Jor’Dynn and treated her as her own daughter,” and argued that the child had experienced emotional and psychological difficulties prior to her placement in the home.

LoTurco also claimed that the broader context of the child’s life, including prior family instability, would be relevant to understanding the circumstances. Prosecutors have disputed those assertions, stating there is no evidence the child engaged in self-harm.

The district attorney’s office has declined to comment on defense claims in detail but has emphasized that the physical and digital evidence gathered so far contradicts those arguments.

Authorities continue to investigate the full timeline of events leading to Jor’Dynn’s death, including how long injuries went untreated and whether additional individuals may have had knowledge of the alleged abuse.

Child welfare advocates have described the case as deeply alarming, particularly given that the child was under formal guardianship and had previously been involved with protective services.

Officials say the investigation remains active as prosecutors prepare for trial. More evidence is expected to be presented in court in the coming months, including forensic analysis, digital records, and witness testimony.

For now, the case has left a community grappling with how a child placed in a supposed protective environment allegedly endured months of suffering without intervention.

As prosecutors move forward, they say their focus remains on accountability and justice for Jor’Dynn Duncan, whose death has become one of the most disturbing child abuse cases to emerge in the region in recent years.
