Inside George Russell and Carmen Montero Mundt’s romance, from blind date to proposal with rare £750,000 diamond ring
GEORGE RUSSELL is the latest Formula One star to reveal he is getting hitched, after announcing his engagement to Carmen Montero Mundt.
The Mercedes driver shared the news on Sunday in a joint post with Carmen to their social media pages.
The couple, both 28, shared a ring emoji and silver heart, alongside a selection of four lovely pictures together.
Carmen, who is a Spanish businesswoman and influencer, was all smiles as she showed off the beautiful ring the Brit placed on her finger.
And fans rushed to congratulate the F1 power couple on the fantastic news.
They have been dating since 2020, and SunSport has taken a look at their blooming relationship as they shifted gears from a blind date all the way to last weekend’s lavish proposal.
Blind date
Russell and Carmen met in Soho, London on a blind date back in 2020 after being introduced through a mutual friend.
In an interview with Tatler, Carmen recalled how she was invited on a double date with a friend who wanted to bring their flatmate for a drink.
Of her date with the then Williams driver, she said: “It was a Sunday night, and my friend was like, ‘I’m dating this guy and he wants to bring his flatmate for a drink.
“Would you mind coming with us? Because I think it’s a little bit awkward…’ I thought he was really funny.”
Russell later got her number and invited her to his house to cook for her at his home in White City.
The driver exclusively admitted in an interview with SunSport that Carmen, who had moved to the city from Jerez in southern Spain two years earlier, had no idea who he was due to having no interest in F1 at the time.
He said: “My mate couldn’t make it, so I thought I’ll swing along to see how it goes.
“She told me she’s from the south of Spain and she wouldn’t ever expect someone to know the small place she’s from. I knew exactly where she was from, so it was quite coincidental.”
Paddock sightings and support
Russell and Carmen have been one of the motorsport’s main power couples since 2020.
Carmen first appeared in the F1 paddock in support of the British driver at the Tuscan Grand Prix that same year, and has been an ever-present figure since.
Russell has spoke about the importance of Carmen to his career and how he is glad they met before his F1 career really took off.
He told SunSport: “I’m so fortunate with Carmen because we met before the craziness of F 1. We met organically and it wasn’t a set up.
“She didn’t know who I was, she didn’t know F 1 and wasn’t even bothered by any of that. She is a very down-to-earth individual and we share values.
“She’s such a hard worker, wants to achieve so much and she really recognises what it takes in my position to be at this level.
“Having her on this journey means an awful lot to me because even though we are living our dream it can be a lonely lifestyle.
“Having somebody to help you disconnect from that actually brings performance as well.”
Health scares
The couple’s true colours have come through when they have been unfortunate to suffer health scares.
In February 2026, Carmen revealed she was hospitalised and had undergone emergency surgery after suffering from appendicitis.
She wrote: “I was planning to share something really special with you today but it will have to wait.
“I’ve been working on a project for almost two years. It will have to wait until I’m back on my feet.
Carmen later posted a picture of herself smiling in a hospital bed next to Mercedes star Russell with an update for fans, writing in her caption: It was appendicitis! Surgery went well and recovering in the best company.”
Likewise, Carmen had returned the favour when Russell lost a staggering NINE POUNDS in the extreme heat of the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix.
He had been left hyper-ventilating in the sweltering conditions and had to recover in an ice bath afterwards.
Carmen attends almost every F1 race and has seen Russell win seven Grand Prix so far.
Proposal and £750K ring
Russell finally popped the question to Carmen six years on from their fateful meeting in London.
Fans rushed to congratulate them online, with the pair sharing loved-up snaps together.
Carmen was seen with a stunning yellow diamond ring on her hand.
According to Arissa Michos, marketing and brand director at Class A Jewellers, the stunning ring has a potential value of around £750k and is between eight and 10 carats.
She told Marie Claire: “Yellow diamonds are rarer and are graded on a different scale based on the intensity of the yellow colour.
“This looks like a Fancy Vivid Yellow, as it’s a very rich colour.
“Yellow diamonds are more expensive because they are rarer than white diamonds.
“Depending on the intensity of the colour, they become rarer and therefore more expensive.”
